Plein Aire Landscape Artist Eileen Fjerstad has been painting professionally in the mountains of Southwest Colorado and the deserts of the Four Corners since the mid 1980’s becoming a well-known regional artist. Fundamentally a self- taught artist, Eileen has augmented her continuing education through periodic immersion in workshops given by recognized artists including John Budicin, George Strickland, Joseph Shephard, David Schwindt, Ann Templeton, Jessica Zemsky, and Jack Hines, and has been mentored for many years by Durango artist Paul Folwell. Fjerstad recently attended the Plein Air Convention held in Monterey, California in April of 2013 where dozens of celebrated artists shared methods and materials through demonstrations and paint-outs which Eileen found exciting, instructive and very stimulating in her own work.
Primarily a “plein-aire” painter Fjerstad , whose painting materials are always close at hand, Eileen worked for many years in the medium of watercolor, producing landscapes alive with the color and light. In recent years the artist has found working in the juicy, malleable, medium of oil to be exciting and satisfying as well, producing works rich in color, texture and light. Endeavoring to capture the ever-changing and delightful compositions provided by the San Juan Mountains as well as the amazing variety of landscapes found in the cliffs, canyons, and “hidden beauty pockets” of nearby desert country has brought great joy to the artist and, hopefully, to her collector as well.
